Happy 14th day of the 2nd Month of the Year!
You know, I hate today, it reminds me of all the people I have felt that I have loved over the years, the rejections, the pain, the lingering fear of being alone for the rest of my life… I REALLY don’t like St Valentine Day, it’s a nice idea, but lets get this straight… for us terminally single people it sucks.
Its not even the fact that at the moment there is no one I particular fancy (I hate that word but Love is powerful word and one I try and keep special in this context). Its not even the fact that last lady I had feelings for I never did anything about, nope its neither of those that really grates. It’s the fact that the media, even more than normal, forces down our throats the images of happy couples, giving into the consumer beast to say “I love you” on a certain day, surely there should be no need for a Valentines day.
I mean if your lucky enough to have someone you both know and both tell each other regularly that you do love each other, and don’t need to be told by some nebulous big brother figure that today you must tell your partner that you love them because you obviously fail to do so the rest of the year. This day creates tensions, arguments, and problems for those involved as they struggle to buy the right gift, panic about trying to get roses, booking the romantic dinner etc etc etc. Have we lost so much of the meaning of love that we know need to prove we love someone with gifts and expensive luxuries?
Grr… perhaps this is just nothing more than a bitter, lonely, single man bemoaning his single status while all around him others are “hitched” or coupled. Or perhaps my singleness allows me to see past the façade of commercialised love and to the now rotten materialist heart of what was once a purer thing, which has now, like some many other tings, been perverted by the mass media and consumerist society into an unholy golden calf.
Laters people, if you are in love with someone today, make sure you NEVER need a St Valentines day to tell them you love them or to treat them with care and do something special for them.
