Nations Favourite Lyric (and a preachy bit)

Another random vote for your favourite poll has just finished, this one was about favourite lyrics… an intersting choice (it was run by VH1 and HMV by the way), the winner, well, to be honest I was actually really surprised and at the same time very pleased. It was “One” by U2… so I present for you now, the lyrics.

Is it getting better?
Or do you feel the same?
Will it make it easier on you now?
You got someone to blame
You say
One love
One life
When it’s one need
In the night
One love
We get to share it
Leaves you baby if you
Don’t care for it

Did I disappoint you?
Or leave a bad taste in your mouth?
You act like you never had love
And you want me to go without
Well it’s

Too late
Tonight
To drag the past out into the light
We’re one, but we’re not the same
We get to
carry each other
carry each other
One

Have you come here for forgiveness?
Have you come to raise the dead?
Have you come here to play Jesus?
To the lepers in your head

Did I ask too much?
More than a lot.
You gave me nothing,
Now it’s all I’ve got
We’re one
But we’re not the same
Well we
Hurt each other
Then we do it again
You say
Love is a temple
Love the higher law
Love is a temple
Love the higher law
You ask me to enter
But then You make me crawl
And I can’t be holding on
To what You got
When all You’ve got is hurt

One love
One blood
One life
You got to do what you should
One life
With each other
Sisters
Brothers
One life
But we’re not the same
We get to
Carry each other
Carry each other

One…

I’m a bit of a U2 fan, musically they may not always be my cup of tea but their lyrics and in particular Bono’s public work have always been powerful beacons. Take time to read those words, some may read religious imagery, some may not, it doesn’t matter either way its message surely transcends all such differences. In many ways is that not the message of the song, for are we not one blood, one people, wither we admit to ourselves or not.

This weekend has been the Christian festival called Easter, a powerful and emotional time in the church. In four days we are lead from betrayal, agony, suffering, rejection, pain, death, loneliness, and then rejoicing. Yet all throughout there is a definite thread of celebration, for we believe in the resurrection and that the cross although full for suffering and shame was also victorious and glorious. Wither you believe in Christ or not, wither you call yourself a Christian, or are far from it, there is one thing that I believe we can take from Easter no matter what your point of view. Easter shows us that one mans actions, one man’s choice can echo for years to come. One man’s life inspired others who carried that inspiration onwards through millennia. Now for the challenge (come on, I’m sure you could see it as soon as this turned all preachy), is your life one which inspires others? Do your actions, no matter how small mean that even if in just some small way the world is better (be that as small as using organic, fair-trade, recycling etc)? Look again at the lyrics of One, think about how they can inspire us to live as one people, and how everything we do effects others, even those we may never meet.

Anyway, better stop getting all preachy… you see this is what happens when I’m bored, haven’t preached in ages, and I have still no idea what is happening with my future (i.e. still no word about Japan, I am beginning to get a bit anxious… well maybe not a bit).

Anyway, I hope you’ve had a good Easter, I’m gonna sign off and play WoW. :)
