Anti-Terrorst Measures on Flights
I am pleased to hear that the authorities have supposedly stopped another terrorist atack on flights, however this has meant a mass disruption today… as you’d expect. However it seems that there are new policies coming into effect, such as this one with BA (who I am flying with in ust over a week).
“Passengers who do decide to travel from any UK airport, may only take through the airport security search point, the following items:
- Travel documents essential for the journey (eg passports, tickets and visas)
- Pocket sized wallets and pocket sized purses plus contents (for example money, credit cards and identity cards). Handbags are not permitted.
- Prescribed medicines essential for the duration of the flight, except in liquid form unless verified as authentic.
- Spectacles and sunglasses, without cases.
- Contact lenses, without bottles of solution
- For those traveling with an infant: baby food, milk and sanitary items essential for the flight.
- Keys (but no electrical key fobs).
Every other item must be carried in customer’s hold luggage.
For clarity, passengers are advised that no electrical or battery powered items including laptops, mobile phones, ipods, remote controls etc can be carried in the cabin and must be checked in as hold baggage.”
Let me clarify this, een if I would allow them to hand check my laptop, ipod and such to show that it is working and not suspicious I have to trust them to put it in teh hold without breaking or damaging it. Also There lists does not include books or toys so you have to take kids on longhaul flights with no toys or books or game consoles to play (okay not just kids, it means I can’t use my psp)
I understand the need for security, I accept certain things but this is just nonsense and needs to be addressed. Hopefully these measures will be reassessed once the crisis is over.
Oh and while I remember I have activated a new anti-spam feature which seems to be working so I have again opened up comments to everyone and not just registered user.
EDIT: From this BBC Article:
…sources close to Transport Secretary Douglas Alexander indicated restrictions could become permanent.
One source told the BBC the “way we travel will never be the same again”.
I sincerly hope not.

We fly back to Canada from Glasgow in about 11 days time and are probably going to have to buy anotyher holdall for our backpacks and other things that we took over as hand luggage. Hopefully they will lift the ban on books and some kids’ stuff before then. We are on a daytime flight so it could be long with two bored kids.
I appreciate all the extra safety measures. I’d rather be inconvenienced if it means arriving safely at our destination.
