Primeval: Prehistoric Paint by Numbers
So… Primeval… ITV’s sci-fi-ish prime time series.
Its okay, which is saying something for a low budget premier episode. That being said its a by the numbers sci-fi show:
The cast:
- intelligent lead who suffered tragic loss of wife and just so happens to specialise in the field of the show (which is prehistoric creatures)
- friend of lead who is rugged tough solider type (in this case someone used to tracking, hunting, and even rescuing animals)
- geeky conspiracy nut who although virtually unconnected gets swept along and instantly is part of the team (student of lead)
- attractive, but intelligent (at least sorta), and obviously compassionate, female
- female government agent, who may or may not have feelings for lead
- male government person who is overall charge and is, well, typical G-Man in many ways
The Plot:
- theoretical science taken to extreme with no explanation (possible time warps to past allow passage between times)
- group thust together and suddenly becomes cohesive
- government trying to keep it hidden
- is the lost love, really lost?
That is just the basics, in short if you watch an real amount of sci-fi shows you’ll have seen the basics of this show in one form or another. The CG was passable, but no worse than Dr Who.
Now, this is not to say that it is not worth watching, its too early for that. I just suspect that there are going to little or no real surprises, but sometimes that can be fun as well. I’ll definitely give it a few more episodes to see how the premise develops.
EDIT: Interesting look at the way the UK and US treat humour by Simon Pegg (of Shaun of the Dead, Spaced, Hot Fuzz fame) - LINK
