Rant - “this wouldn’t happen if it was…” (religious in nature)
I have my fair share of opinions, all of which are almost guaranteed to annoy at least one person. I have strong opinions on religion, of course, and especially when it comes to perceived Christian persecution.
Let me first set this straight, there IS persecution, there are those brothers and sister who are imprisoned for no other reason than what they choose to believe. Many are beaten, and even killed for the same reason. THIS is persecution and this is a real issue. Everyone should have the freedom to believe what they want to believe, even if you follow Christianity it is biblical to think this. We must allow everyone to choose, for it is in choice there is freedom.
However what I hear lots of coming from some sources is that suddenly Christians in the UK are being persecuted, or we are under threat of becoming so. What is worse is that these reports are then usually tagged with the phrase “well, this wouldn’t happen if it was the X”. Give me a break. There are some occasions where people of faith are persecuted on a small local level, such as harassment, vandalism etc. However, removal of laws which give preferential treatment to churches, etc are NOT persecutions its called equality.
I think that if people actually looked at these reports and really check the facts they would find that most of these things affect all faiths or are actually nothing like what is being reported. Oh, and when I say check the facts I do not mean in ONE newspaper or from ONE source, even if it is a “christian” source. Look at multiple sources, try and find the initial source for this news. Do not, and I cannot stress this enough, DO NOT take what you read as truth, as even the bible says, TEST EVERYTHING! People lie. Christians lie (even though they shouldn’t). Papers and governments most certainly DO lie. What is worse is a truth that is passed through so many sources that it no longer is true and changes it meaning completely.
Look at the abysmal relationship between Islam and Christianity…. ooooh feel the sudden tension. No? Good. The truth, and some may find this uncomfortable, is that the majority of Muslims are like the majority of Christians. Good, faithful, and accepting people. Islam is not what the vocal minority make it seem to be, same as the vocal minority of right wing fundamentalist Christians (you know the ones I mean) which taint Christianity with a black stain which we seem to be less willing to make waves about, as we would rather be pointing our fingers at another faith. That of course goes both ways, in fact every way.
Lets grow up a bit people. We are one people, one species, and certainly from a Christian viewpoint we must care for all regardless of belief and any faiths they have of us (be it positive of negative). That means forging an understanding amongst all faiths (note I say understanding, not a merging, we should celebrate our differences and uniqueness) so we can see the truth behind the lies of the popular press (and governments), the majority of religious people hate the PC movement, in fact most PEOPLE hate the PC movement. A closer understanding between people of all faiths (and none) would help us cut through the government manufactured PC environment and the hate and fear inducing panic of the popular media.
Finally before I insult everyone I’ll say one last thing to my annoyed Christians friends, think about when the church grew the most in history.
Let me clear, that we should always speak up when something happens that is not just unfair but rather threatens liberty and freedom (oh, and and actually understand that situation as I have said above), and for the love of God, use your brain and do not give in to anger and fear at the first sign of trouble! We are called to love our neighbour as our-self, do not fear them, do not blame them. Also consider this, what image does this portray to those who have no faith? Its not an inviting image is it?
I’m going now… but it felt good to let rip again, just like the old days ![]()
