2016 – The Games

Time for me to look over the games 2016, I have restricted this only to games I have played that were released this year.  This does leave out a couple of games that I only started this year but I had bought earlier and were good, but it keeps the list shorter :)…  and where possible I have linked to a video of some gameplay.

I would have liked to have also looked at my other gaming loves of card game, role playing games, board games, and table top games, but I have been rather out of that scene for a while for various reasons but hoping one day to at the very least get back into board gaming and role playing… anyway, on with the video games!

Overwatch (again :))
Yeah, I still play Overwatch, although taken a bit more of a break recently, I still struggle to play competitive mode, and I still think this is one of the best online multiplayer FPS out there at the moment. I love its heroes, its world, and they are still evolving its gameplay and game modes. It is really rather fun.

Darkest Dungeon
Brutal game. Turn based dungeon crawler basically in a mythos inspired world. Its grim, dark, and you will loose. A lot. But its one I keep meaning to return more to.

The Division
I got bored, quickly. I think this would have been a lot more fun playing with people, it looks fantastic and controls well enough, but the bullet spongy enemies and meh plot bored me.
There is a new “Survival” DLC which although you need the full game to play runs separately from the rest of the game and I hear its getting some good reception even from those who didn’t like the core game.

DOOM
Without doubt my Game of the Year.
Just utterly fantastic. One of the best pure FPS’s I have played in years. If you have any love for FPS pick this up… I ignored the multiplayer mostly by the way as I wasn’t overly convinced of it during its beta, but I hear its got better… but either way the single player campaign is MORE than worth the price of admission.

Stardew Valley
You basically play as a farmer, who occasionally delves into mines to find minerals and fight creatures, but mainly you build up a farm, planting crops, tending them, harvesting them, making relationships with the town folk… easy game to loose many hours in.

Starbound
This officially released this year, although its been in early access for quite a while. Its, well, a side-scrolling space exploration/adventure game where you can build bases (a la Terraria/Minecraft) but has a much better constructed single player story quest (which you can ignore really). I have put quite a few hours into this, and if you can get people to play with you it just gets better (I am told).

Devil Daggers
It is a simple enough premise, you run, you shot, you survive. Its minimalist retro style somehow enhances its very dark twisted aesthetic, its a incredibly fast paced FPS and you will be lucky if you can last more than a couple of minutes… I’m lucky if I last more than 30 seconds, 70 odd is my best, the world record is currently less than 15 minutes.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided
This could have been an easy GotY pick, but its glitches, storylines that were obvious butchered out just to make DLC, what feels like an incomplete (DLC?) and/or rushed feeling ending, along with other poor decisions that I lay squarely at SquareEnix feet (rather the Edios), take so much away from what is otherwise a brilliant game. They improved the stealth and cover systems, it feels even better to play than Human Revolution did, but those flaws take it from excellent to just good, and a definite “wait for the ‘game of the year’/’directors cut’ edition” recommendation, because despite those flaws above it is a fantastic game waiting to be made whole again.

Forza Horizon 3
Surprise hit for me, picked it up on a whim (after talking with friend about it and playing the demo), and it is really quite fun open world driving game, wish it was more like Burnout, and I remain a tad sceptical about how it controls some cars (but if I am honest, I should put that down to me more than the game), but either way it is fun to take some well represented high end sports cars crashing through the “Australian” outback.

Dishonored 2
Not finished this yet, but it’s been good so far, some glitches and issues but it’s just more Dishonored and that is fine by me as that world and setting is awesome. Although I am again trying to do the ghost/no kill run in my first play through so LOTS of reloading 🙂
